Maintaining Your Sanity in the Car: The Rainbow Game

  by Andrew Wolgemuth

Whether you’re road-tripping, heading across town to watch a game with friends, or merely going to the grocery store to buy some more mac & cheese, good car games help keep everyone chill. In the vein of the classic Alphabet Game (in which the letters of the alphabet are identified in order on storefronts and billboards … and licenses plates, if you’re looking to hurry things along), The Rainbow Game is an easy activity for the car ride in which you search for the colors of the rainbow in order:

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Indigo (dark blue)
  • Violet (purple)

If you need to burn some additional time, add in a few more colors for an expanded rainbow:

  • White
  • Pink
  • Red
  • Maroon
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Light Blue
  • Blue
  • Dark Blue
  • Violet / Purple
  • Black
  • Brown
  • Grey

To add another step into the game, use a coloring sheet such as these. When kids find a color, they color it into their rainbow before looking for the next shade in the bow.

Before you know it, you’ll be at your destination, sanity maintained.

Of course, driving to score donuts is a sanity-saver of a different type. And eventually the car you’re driving will need a little washing; here are some tips for making that an event your kids can join in.
